Items IV & V - IV. PRESENTATION
IV.a. Strengthening Our Schools in South Natomas
Quick Summary / Abstract:
William Young, Deputy Superintendent Heather Garcia, Associate
Superintendent Doug Orr, Associate Superintendent
Recommended Motion:
Staff will share information on a possible plan to expand American Lakes,
Jefferson and Bannon Creek from K-5 schools to K-8 schools. This would:
1) involve facilities upgrades and expansion to all three sites, 2) address the
challenges to find a permanent site for NGMS, and 3) allow for development
of academic programs in South Natomas like K-8 efforts at Heron and Paso
Verde School. Initial thoughts for academic programs at these schools
would possibly include dual immersion, robotics/STEM, and a third program
to be determined from stakeholder input. This is aligned with the The Next 5
strategic directions: 1.2 - Examine possibilities to further expand art, world
languages and civics in schools; 2.1 - Beginning in elementary school,
continue to develop college and career access and readiness for all
students; 2.4 - Continue to promote and refine the pathways and programs
at secondary schools and support elementary and K-8 schools to develop
college and career focused programs; 2.5 - Continue providing 21st century
classroom technology and support the infrastructure for expansion to
prepare students for college and career success; 3.1 - NUSD schools will
expand and improve promotion of what is unique and successful about their
school; and 4.2 - Support schools as each continues to develop inclusive,
engaging, safe and supportive school culture and climate.
